Danielle Collins declared she would retire from the WTA tour at some point this year following her loss to Iga Swiatek at the 2024 Australian Open.

Collins led 4-1 against the world No. 1 in the final on Thursday and was on the verge of pulling off an upset in Melbourne. But Swiatek rallied to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and go to the third round after falling twice.

Collins said she was disappointed with the outcome, but it didn’t hurt as much as it usually did because she was in the last stretch of her career, during a press conference after the game.

She expressed her thoughts and said: “At this point, I’m kind of at the end of my career and they don’t sting quite as much, to be honest. I feel like I have kind of gotten to the point where they matter and my career means a lot to me, but at the end of the day you either win or you lose, and that’s all there is to it.”

The American said that she intends to retire this season, but she hasn’t decided exactly when questioned about whether or not she is close to the end of her career.

She added: “This is going to be my last season competing. I don’t really know exactly when, but this will be my last season and I’m looking forward to that. I have other things that I’d kind of like to accomplish in my life outside of tennis and would like to be able to have the time to be able to do that. Having kids is a big priority for me.”

The best Grand Slam moments for Collins have taken place in Melbourne Park. She reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal in 2019 and won three Top 20 wins. She defeated Swiatek in the semifinals three years later to go to the final, where she was defeated by Ashleigh Barty, the top seed at the time. In 2022, she attained a career-high ranking of No. 7.
