Choking Serena survives huge scare

That’s no good for Serena Williams.

The world no.1 is feeling too much the pressure of winning a historical Grand Slam to be too far away from her stellar standards. That Serena was struggling was pretty clear from the interview right before the match when she was in “cathartic mode”

Serena found herself immediately 0-3 down in the opener against Bethanie Mattek-Sands to lose the first set 6-3. In the second the world no.1 failed to serve out the set when she was 5-4 up, but luckily (from her) from that moment she won 8 consecutive games to win the match 3-6 7-5 6-0. Match Stats.

Serena: I had to adapt to her game

The world no.1 commented “I’m not trying to live on the edge. I’m playing players that come out really strong. I don’t think I came out too slow, I just think Bethanie played really well, I had to do things and adapt to her game. I was finally able to get some rhythm going toward the end of the second.

I said, ‘you know what, Serena, keep going, here’s another one, keep going. Keep trying, keep trying, keep trying, and keep trying.’”

Next vs. Keys

Serena will have a tough task in the 4th round to play Madison Keys. Head to head is 1-0 for Serena after she defeated Madison in the Australian Open semifinal this year. If Serena wants to win this one she has to get rid of her typical slow start.
