Nishikori upset by Paire in the 1st round

Benoit Paire makes headlines with a huge upset at the US Open. The world no. 41 defeats the 2014 runner-up Kei Nishikori 6-4 3-6 4-6 7-6 (6) 6-4 in 3 hours and 14 minutes.

The key moment

The most important part of the match was when Nishikori wasn’t unable to convert 2 consecutive match points in the 4th set tiebreak (6-4). The Japanese squandered the first match point with a wide forehand. In the second match point it was Paire to deny Nishikori on his serve. Eventually Kei lost 4 consecutive point to drop the tiebreak at 6.

The only difference between Kei and Benoit in the decider was a break in the 5th game (3-2 for the Frenchman). Eventually the match ended with the Japanese scoring more points than Paire (160 vs 156).

Nishikori. I’ll try to come back strong next year

A disappointed Nishikori commented “It’s always very sad to lose in the first round, but I think he was playing good tennis. I don’t think I played badly. Didn’t play great, but still, it’s never easy first match. He’s a good player. I will try to think about the next one, and I hope I can come back strong next year.”

Paire will face Ilhan in the 2nd round.
