Dominic Thiem beats Roger Federer in Madrid semifinals.
The Match
Thiem had an enthralling encounter against Federer which he won 3-6 7-6(11) 6-4 in 2 hours and 11 minutes in Madrid.
Thiem saved two match points in the second set tiebreak at 7/8 and 9/10 and carried the momentum in the decider set to win the match.
The first set was smooth for Federer as he started in a solid manner winning the first three games (3-0). Federer won the first set easily 6-3 in 30 minutes after losing only 5 points in the first 5 games.
In the second set, both players won their service games and the set went into a tiebreak. Thiem was down 3-0 in the tiebreak but won 6 out of the 7 points after that. Federer didn’t manage to convert 2 match points at 8/7 and 10/9 in the breaker.
In the third set, Thiem hit some excellent forehands, he broke Federer’s serve in the 3rd game (2-1) of the set but Roger responded and broke back to equal at 4-4. Dominic again broke Federer in the following game (5-4) and then defended his serve to win the set 6-4.
H2H Djokovic vs. Thiem
Thiem will now play the world no.1 Novak Djokovic. Thiem has now the chance to win his 3rd title of 2019 after he won in Barcelona and Indian Wells in 2019.
The head to head is 5-2 for Djokovic. However, Thiem won the last 2 matches and they were on clay.
