With a 2-0 victory over Great Britain on Thursday, Novak Djokovic guided Serbia into the Davis Cup semifinals, setting up an exciting matchup with Italy’s Jannik Sinner. Djokovic defeated Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4.
After Australia takes on Finland on Friday, Italy, who defeated the Netherlands 2-1, will play Serbia in the second semifinal on Saturday in Malaga.
At the end of the match, Djokovic criticized the British fans for trying to silence his victory speech with drumming. He got angry in his post-match interview and said: “Learn how to respect people; learn how to respect players; learn how to behave yourselves.”
Djokovic played with his characteristic, relentless quality. The first singles rubber saw the 24-time Grand Slam champion defeat the tough Norrie 7-6 (7/2) and 7-6 (8/6) after Miomir Kecmanovic defeated Jack Draper 7-6 (7/2).
Sinner, the world No. 4 player, led Italy into the Davis Cup semifinals by winning both of his singles rubbers and the pivotal doubles match.
Djokovic celebrated his historic 400th week at No. 1 with a straight-sets win on Sunday in Turin, where he defeated Sinner to win the ATP Finals. In a year where he has won seven titles, including three Grand Slams, Djokovic stated earlier this week that winning the competition is one of his greatest ambitions.
