Former British No. 1 and tennis commentator Tim Henman has expressed his confidence in Emma Raducanu’s ability to secure more major victories before her retirement. Raducanu made history in 2021 when she became the first-ever qualifier to win a Grand Slam, triumphing at the US Open.
At just 18 years old and participating in only her second Grand Slam tournament, Raducanu’s remarkable journey at Flushing Meadows captured the tennis world’s attention. Since that historic win, she has faced challenges, including injuries and disappointing results, leading to surgeries on both wrists and her right ankle in May.
When asked by Sky Sports if he envisions Raducanu winning another Grand Slam in the future, Tim Henman expressed his optimism. He said,
“I hope so. Anyone who can do what she did in New York is a phenomenal player. You can’t fluke that type of thing. So, I certainly see her winning big tournaments in the future.”
Raducanu’s 2021 US Open campaign included an impressive run of 10 consecutive straight-set victories, an unprecedented achievement for an 18-year-old qualifier. Her win at Flushing Meadows remains a historic milestone in tennis.
During that memorable time, Raducanu worked with coach Andrew Richardson, but she later made a surprising decision to part ways with him after her US Open triumph.
Tim Henman fondly recalled that period, saying,
“It was fantastic. I enjoyed it so much. When you look at that run for Raducanu in the context of professional tennis, no man or woman has ever qualified and made the final of a Grand Slam, and she qualified and won the whole thing, winning 20 consecutive sets, it was incredible.”
He also expressed hope for Raducanu’s return to top-level competition and participation in major events in the near future. While she may have faced setbacks, her incredible talent and potential continue to make her a prominent figure in the world of tennis.
