Despite Carlos Alcaraz’s early departure from the Shanghai Masters, Roger Federer believes that he will have an unbelievable future in tennis. The world No. 2 lost to Grigor Dimitrov in three sets in Shanghai’s round of 16 and hasn’t won any title since Wimbledon in July. He most recently lost to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the China Open.
Federer thinks Alcaraz deserves enormous respect for what he has accomplished thus far and is not concerned about his recent losses despite what may seem to be a decline in form.
Federer expressed his thoughts about Alcaraz in a podcast and said: “Alcaraz is great. He’s still young and everything that he has achieved is fantastic, not just on clay or the hard surfaces. Winning Wimbledon against Novak [Djokovic] in the final is no joke. He didn’t need to really prove that point but that’s another super asterisk in his CV. It’s mighty impressive.”
He added: “Of course, as it was with Rafa Nadal, Novak, myself, and Andy Murray, we all expect now every generation to produce their best tennis every single week, but it’s hard to do that. I think Carlos has done as well as he possibly could have so far. And he’s going to lose sometimes, like here in Shanghai, but he’s doing fantastic. He’s got a great game and obviously an unbelievable future ahead of him.”
Alex Corretja, a tennis analyst, reiterated Federer’s thoughts on Alcaraz when he emphasized that maintaining peak performance for such a prolonged season is impossible.
Roger Federer says it’s normal for Carlos Alcaraz to lose from time to time:
