Shelton, who turned professional last year following a standout collegiate tennis season with the Florida Gators, spoke highly of his practice sessions with Nadal, describing them as some of the most incredible moments in his burgeoning career. He particularly admired Nadal’s explosive style of play, noting that the intensity and dedication Nadal displays in matches extend to his practice sessions.
In 2023, Shelton made his debut at the Australian Open and quickly made a name for himself. His Melbourne Park campaign was nothing short of remarkable, marked by his ability to fend off a match point in the opening round and advance to the quarter-finals.
During his impressive run, the 20-year-old overcame notable opponents, including Nicolas Jarry and J.J. Wolf. His performances earned him the distinction of being the youngest American to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final since the legendary Andy Roddick in 2003.
Shelton’s Australian Open journey eventually came to an end in the semi-finals, where he faced fellow American Tommy Paul. Despite a valiant effort, Shelton couldn’t overcome Paul’s experience.
