Azarenka surprises everybody by pulling out of Dubai tournament for an injury to the left ankle

Ahi ahi ahi. The world of tennis is really riddled of injuries.

Nowadays most of the tournaments have to cope with an increasing number of players retinring either at the beginning of the tournament or during a march.

This may be caused by to main factors. First the pressing calendar, second the game is now much more phisicall than before. Long and tough rallies take the toll on players bodies (eg. the recent Australian Open final).

This event in Dubai just confirm it. 4 of the top 10 players had to retire. Kvitova, Li and Zvonareva also pulled out.

Going back to Azarenka, ‘I’m concerned not to do more damage,’ she sai. ‘I’ve been told to rest ever since Australia.

‘I left it a couple of days (after arriving in Dubai) to see how it is, but it is difficult in that time to do a miracle.

‘It will give me peace of mind now to make sure it is not really serious. It has to be taken care of right away.’

‘I definitely need time to take my mind off tennis,’ Azarenka added. ‘I have not been home since for ever.’

‘I don’t want to repeat mistakes I made before,’ she said. ‘I would sometimes play when I was not a hundred percent, when I was only fifty percent sometimes.

‘It did no good for myself or the tournament. Health is the most important thing. After tennis there is hopefully a long life, and I can’t jeopardise that.’
