The organization of the Laver Cup has always pushed the concept that this competition is a serious tournament and not an exhibition. This event is also sanctioned by the ATP and therefore it should be considered as a serious tournament. It seems that this was not the understanding of Gael Monfils who was extremely irritated with his opponent Felix Auger Aliassime when the Canadian player wanted to implement some ATP rules.
The Canadian, who was serving in the opening set at 2-2, became irate when Monfils sat on the sidelines in between points. After achieving his goal of a successful service hold, Auger-Aliassime criticized the chair umpire for being too forgiving and questioned why the French veteran was not given a time violation.
“Are you sticking to the ATP rules? Are you telling me that’s normal? He sits down for like 30 seconds. I mean, that a time violation warning. That’s not, ‘I’m gonna talk to him.’ Cause I can play games too. I can play games too,” he said.
Auger Aliassime & Monfils got into a bit of an argument during their match at Laver Cup.
Gael felt like the atmosphere was a relaxed, fun environment.
Felix was treating it like a regular ATP tournament.
Does anyone speak French? 😂
