Federer too easy with Monfils

Roger Federer had the tricky task to play Gael Monfils in the 4th round in Paris. That was a difficult challenge for many reasons: first Gael seemed to have found his range against Roger on clay (he beat him twice on the dirt in the past 7 months); second Gael loves to play big matches in front of the home crowd.

Things seemed a bit more complicated after the match was interrupted yesterday for darkness on a 1-set-all score line.

Eventually Roger won this match in 4 sets (6-3 4-6 6-4 6-1), but at the end of the day the encounter was not that difficult for Federer even if there was the “little” drama of posponing the match. In fact, the Maestro broke Monfils at the beginning of each set he won to have a relatively easy run. The Frenchman also completely gave up in the last set. Eventually the match lasted just more than 2 hours.

Federer: I wanted a good start

Roger commented “I wanted to get off to a good start, because you never know how he will be playing. So I felt good. I was calm yesterday. I was calm this morning. So we (Roger and his team) adopted the right game plan and the right tactical approach. I’m very happy.”

Next vs. Wawrinka

Roger will play his dear friend Stan Wawrinka for a place in the semi-final. Head to head is 16-2 for the Maestro that is the favorite to win the match.
