Weird stuff in Lugano after Polona Hercog wins an unexpected title in Lugano.
Before this tournament, the world no.89 was having a horrible 2019 after she crashed in the openers in Auckland, Hobart, and Melbourne. In addition, the Slovenian failed to qualify in Doha, Dubai, and Miami but she accessed the main draw in all the tournaments as a lucky loser before losing immediately. Therefore, before Lugano, she won only 1 match in a main draw (as a lucky loser) and she had a 5-9 win-loss record.
Everything changed for Polona in Lugano on clay (her favorite surface) where she played extremely well after defeating Carla Suarez Navarro 3-6 6-3 6-4, Sorana Cirstea 3-6 7-6 (0) 6-4, Veronika Kudermentova 6-4 6-1, Fiona Ferro 7-5 6-4, and Iga Swiatek in the final 6-3 3-6 6-3.
This was Polona’s 3rd career title after she won Bastad in 2011 and 2012.
That’s a great way to get back in style in the season.
