Tennis has almost moved past the problem of the wage difference between the ATP and the WTA. Some competitions are still affected, though. The champions Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic were on display in the Cincinnati Masters, which just came to an end. The prize money awarded to the two, however, will not be equal. Djokovic will actually receive a payment of more than 100% of Gauff’s earnings.
Gauff’s payout for the same tournament has previously been lower than that of her ATP counterpart. She took first place at the Citi Open before competing in the Canadian Open, earning a share of one-third of the winner’s prize money for men’s singles.
Myles David, the host of a tennis podcast, highlighted the stark difference in prize money received by the two competitors. He highlighted: “Novak Djokovic will receive $1,019,335 for winning the ATP1000 event in Cincinnati. Coco Gauff will receive $454,500 for winning the WTA1000 event in Cincinnati. They played at the same venue all week, They played best of 3 sets all week. They will not get paid the same.”
This is a problem for the tennis community because many events award equal prize money. Gauff, however, had to deal with this situation twice because it first occurred during the Citi Open.
