The former champion, Juan Martin del Potro, revealed that his body is not enabling him to make a comeback, ending any expectations of any last ride at the US Open.
When Del Potro last competed on the ATP tour, it was in the Buenos Aires Open 18 months earlier. The distressed Argentine struggled to perform because of a severe knee injury.
The 34-year-old had earlier this year declared that he expected to return for the “special tournament US Open” that he had won back in 2009.
Del Potro, however, later acknowledged on social media that he is unable to compete at the US Open and stated that his tennis career has come to an end.
Del Potro said it during a conversation: “As you know, my desire to return to a court as special as the US Open made me very excited. I tried by all means to reach term, but my body does not accompany me 100% to be able to feel comfortable and happy to share, once again with you, a unique moment.”
