“Old man can still play,” says Stan Wawrinka about his tennis match vs. Tiafoe

Stan Wawrinka brought up his age on social media after his match with Tiafoe and said that he still had the stamina to compete against younger opponents.

In the 2023 Western and Southern Open’s second round on Wednesday in Cincinnati, Stan Wawrinka defeated Frances Tiafoe.

In one hour and 18 minutes, Wawrinka defeated the No. 2 American in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. In order to secure his second top-10 victory of the year, the experienced Swiss player made only two unforced errors compared to Tiafoe’s thirteen.

He used his unique one-handed backhand and aggressive baseline play to defeat Tiafoe four times in a row. Wawrinka, who is 38 years old, is now the oldest participant in the draw. The three-time Grand Slam champion is one of four players in Cincinnati’s third round who are 35 or older. The other three are Gael Monfils (36), Novak Djokovic (36), and Adrian Mannarino (35).

After his match with Tiafoe, he discussed his age on social media and said that he still had the stamina to compete against younger opponents.

Now ranked no.51, Wawrinka has managed to achieve a composed 24-15 record in 2023. Stan is currently playing in Cincinnati where he managed to beat the world no.73 Brandon Nakashima 6-3 6-75 6-3 and the world no.10 Frances Tiafoe 6-3 6-4.

Stan Wawrinka will fight against the world no.70 Max Purcell in the 3rd round on Thursday at 3:30 pm on STADIUM 3. In the past, they have never competed against each other so far in top tournaments.

The Swiss reached the final in Umag (Plava Laguna Croatia Open).

The Swiss won 16 titles in his career: 8 on hard courts, 7 on clay courts and 1 on indoor courts. (See the list of his titles)

Wawrinka is scheduled to play next at the U.S. Open (U.S. Open). He will start the tournament from the main draw that will commence on the 28th of August.
