Murray wins first clay title

Finally Andy Murray wins his first title on clay!

Before last week, the world no.3 has won 31 tournaments and curiously enough none of them was on the dirt. Finally Murray ended this drought after winning the title in Munich, but that wasn’t easy at all.

After an easy opener (6-2 6-2 over Zverev), Andy had to win 2 consecutive matches in the same day against Rosol (coming from a set down) and clay court specialist Bautista-Agut. The biggest test was the +3 hours final against Kohlschreiber that Andy won 7-6 (4) 5-7 7-6 (4).

Murray: It means a lot

Andy was visibly happy for this title “It means a lot to have won. It was my first final on the clay, having lost a few semi-finals at Roland Garros, Rome and Monte-Carlo. We played a very high standard match. I just managed to hang on at the end.

“He served unbelievably well. I had very few chances when I was returning. We may even play one another in Madrid, in a few days’ time. Philipp is a superb competitor and fought right to the end. It is nice to have won my first clay title and I hope to win another one soon.”

Andy will now go and compete in Madrid where he might face Kohlschreiber once again in his opener!
