Dimitrov survives Verdasco in Monte-Carlo

Grigor Dimitrov had a rough encounter against Fernando Verdasco in his opener in Monte-Carlo. The Spaniard was still energizes after a couple of good runs in Miami (where he defeated Rafa) and Houston (he lost in the semi). Grigor on the other side is not having a great season, so things could go nasty for the Bulgarian.

After exchanging the first 2 sets, Dimitrov had a great start in the 3rd to win 4 consecutive games with 2 breaks up (4-1).  Then the world no.11 lost his serve at 0 in the next game (4-2) to win the decider after saving 6 break points in the last game. The final score was 6-4 4-6 6-4. Match Stats.

Dimitrov: The first match is never easy

Grigor commented “It’s never easy, especially in the first match, having an opponent like that. Verdasco is known for his strength, especially on a clay court. I’m really happy with the win because it shows that I’ve done something right in the days coming into the tournament.”

Next vs. Fognini
Grigor will play bad boy Fabio Fognini in the next round. Head to head is 1-all.
