Incredible stuff in Indian Wells as Felix Auger Aliassime beats Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. While this may come as a surprise to many, going back in the days, the Canadian used to be Stefanos’ nemesis in juniors as he beat the Greek already 3 times even if he was 2 years younger.
The match
It was the Canadian to draw the first blood already in the 3rd game when he broke Tsitsipas. Then Felix was majestic in defending his serve in the following game after saving 6 break points. That proved to be the key of the set (and probably of the match) as the Canadian conceded only 2 points in the following 3 service games to win the opener 6-4.
Tsitsipas dropped his serve again the 3rd game of the 2nd set and this time he had only 1 chance to redeem himself with a break point in the 6th game. The Greek couldn’t convert that, and eventually he was broken in the following game to lose the contest 6-4 6-2 in 77 minutes.
That 3 wins when I was a junior helped. AUGER ALIASSIME
After the match, the Canadian commented
“I wasn’t sure what to expect. I definitely didn’t expect to win that way. But I believed in myself, was able to impose my game like I did in the first round, and that’s it.
I know him well, and I felt like maybe those three wins that I got in juniors gave me a little bit of an edge mentally.”
Felix will face either Roberto Bautista Agut or Yoshihito Nishioka in the 3rd round.
