PARANOIA. Top player talks about major issue with Wimbledon’s new underwear rule

There is a new rule in Wimbledon that may help women tennis players to reduce anxiety

Camila Giorgi

The latest Wimbledon rule modification involving underwear has drawn criticism from Ons Jabeu. Ons of Tunisia, who is presently rated No. 6 on the WTA Tour, is getting ready to compete at the SW19.

The 28-year-old, however, has carefully considered the decision to allow female players to now wear dark-colored underwear at Wimbledon. All stars were required to wear white under previous rules, which barred the wearing of any other color. Now, in advance of the opening round of qualification matches, the amended rule has been introduced.

Ons commented: “Everybody will know that you have your period. So I’m not sure which part of it is good. I think I don’t think I’m going to wear anything. If all the girls will wear it, I think it will make it better.

But I think it’s a great thing that Wimbledon is trying to help women feel more comfortable on the court.”

Chief executive Sally Bolton commented: “It is our hope that this rule adjustment will help players focus purely on their performance by relieving a potential source of anxiety.
