19-year-old Madison Keys beats Venus Williams to reach the AO semis

Great stuff in Melbourne!

World no.35 Madison Keys manages to reach her first slam final after a battle against her childhood hero Venus Williams.

The match was a thriller especially in the third set when Venus was 4-3 and 1 break up. Then Madison found her way back to win 3 consecutive games and conquer the semifinal (6-3 4-6 6-4).

Madison: I am very happy

The teenager commented “First of all, I’m very happy I’m into the semifinals, but the moment’s definitely sweeter being able to play Venus to get there. I was trying to enjoy the moment, and I did, and I get to enjoy another moment in the next round!”

Venus: Still happy

The American had a great January after winning the tournament in Auckland and reaching the quarters in Melbourne “It’s definitely been a great last four weeks. A lot of match wins, a lot of momentum, just a lot of great things happening that everybody wants to happen in their career – hopefully I can keep this up. I think a lot of players would have been happy with this tournament. I’m happy with progress. I’m not happy with a loss, I’ll tell you that.”

Next vs. Serena

Madison will now face Serena in the semifinal. This will be the first time they play each other.
