The French Open crowd did not like the American player. Taylor Fritz was roundly booed and whistled after he defeated one of their own, in fact, their last guy in the tournament. Fritz’s answer? He ordered them to be quiet. Time and time again.
After defeating 78th-ranked Arthur Rinderknech in the second round on Thursday night with a comeback score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, Roland Garros got into a heated exchange with the crowd at Court Suzanne Lenglen.
On the final point, Rinderknech attempted a lob that fell long. Fritz, who was sprinting toward the baseline to chase the ball, quickly glanced up into the crowd and put his right index finger to his lips, practically yelling, “Hush!” He retained that position as he made his way back toward the net for the post-match handshake before opening his arms wide, windmilling them slightly to encourage the commotion, and yelling: “Let’s go! Let me hear it!”
Further jeers were directed at Fritz during the ensuing winner’s on-court interview, as 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli kept stopping her attempts to speak into her microphone.
Spectacular shithousery from Taylor Fritz, who guarantees he will get booed for the rest of the tournament – and I am here for it.#RolandGarrospic.twitter.com/VyXYxsbQeJ
