Both Serena Williams and Garbine Muguruza had a tricky 3rd round and now they have to face each other for the quarters.
Serena
The American had a (now) typical Serena’s match against Elina Svitolna. The world no.1 appeared once again weak and lethargic in the opening set to lose 6-4. Then Serena got back her composure to trash Svitolina in the final 2 sets and win 4-6 6-2 6-0.
Serena commented “I was a little passive in the first set, and she was hitting a lot of winners. So I just started changing the pace and being more aggressive, and just doing the best I could. I knew I needed to hit my first serve harder – I knew I had to start using it more.”
Muguruza
Garbine had also one of her strange matches to defeat the unpredictable Timea Bacsinszky 6-3 4-6 6-0.
Head to Head
Serena and Garbine played each other twice. Head to head is 1-all as Garbine upset Serena last year at the French Open.
Garbine commented “That day [Roland Garros] I played really well. I did what me and my coach were talking about doing before the match. Everything was perfect. That’s why I could win that match. You never have these kinds of matches when you play perfectly, so I’m just hoping I can do the same thing in two days.”
Interesting enough both Serena and Garbine have served a bagel (6-0) in every match they have played at this Australian Open… can we expect some more in the next match?
