Bouchard, Sharapova 1 step away from great quarter

Genie Bouchard and Maria Sharapova are now 1 step away from clashing in the quarters.

Bouchard

Genie had a tough match against world no. 36 Caroline Garcia from France. The young Canadian had to recover twice in the first set from being a break down. The contest stopped after the duo was trailing on a 5-all score-line. From that moment on Genie won 8 consecutive games to finally grab the match  7-5 6-0.

Bouchard commented “I wasn’t playing great tennis in the first set.  I feel like she was putting some pressure on me and I really didn’t feel like I got a rhythm. But I’m happy that I just kept going. Even if it wasn’t going so well, I was able to turn it around.”

Genie will play world no.42 Irina-Camelia Begu in the 4th round. They have never played each other so far.

Sharapova

Maria was in ”destruction mode” to demolish world no.31 Zarina Diyas 6-1 6-1 in just 61 minutes. After the match Maria commented “I think I rebounded well [she saved 2 match points in the previous match] I had a good hit yesterday. I thought about what I wanted to try to achieve tonight, no matter who I played. I focused on myself more than anything else. Just tried to be a bit more aggressive and concentrate – I thought I did a good job of focusing well. She can be a tough, tough player to play against if you give her the time to change down the line like she likes to do, stepping down and hitting flat and low. If you give her the time, she’ll do it.”

Next stop for Maria is Shuai Peng. Head to head is 4-1 for Maria.
