Rune Scolded By The Umpire

For a contentious incident that occurred during his match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Madrid Open, Holger Rune was addressed by chair umpire Carlos Bernardes. In a late-night drama that lasted three hours and five minutes at Madrid’s Manolo Santana Stadium, Fokina defeated Rune. The Spaniard defeated the World No. 7 in three intense sets, 7-6(1), 5-7, 7-6, to earn his fourth victory over a Top-10 (5).

Rune hit a second serve in the first set, which was called in. Fokina, however, opposed the automated line call. As the Spaniard brought up his complaint with the umpire, Bernardes, Rune moved to the opposing side of the court and purportedly removed the contentious mark. As they supported their home favorite Fokina, the crowd became enraged at his perceived actions.

Carlos Bernardes scolding Rune

Rune expressed his dissatisfaction with the umpire for the angry atmosphere in the crowd. However, Bernardes counseled the 20-year-old to concentrate on playing tennis because his initial actions had enraged the crowd.

“I’m going to tell you one thing and that’s it for the whole match. There are crowds that you cannot control so if you do a thing like that. If you just play tennis, they don’t do anything else.

I am just trying to help you to get through this. I have experience here that you can not play if they start to do. For them, what you did was erase the mark. There was no reason for that.
