After making an outrageous dig at Dayana Yastremska after winning the Madrid Open’s first round, Eugenie Bouchard has since apologized to the Ukrainian. The Canadian athlete appeared to criticize her rival over a prior doping suspension that had been removed in June of 2021.

On Wednesday, Bouchard defeated Yastremska in the first round by overcoming a set deficit to win 6-7(6) 6-2 6-2. The most notable aspect of her performance, though, came after the match when she publicly criticized her opponent for a prior drug suspension in a Twitter post.

Yastremska was cleared!

It seemed Bouchard made a reference to Yastremska’s prior drug suspension at the start of 2021. But the Ukrainian was given the all-clear just six months later, and in June of that year, he started competing again on the tour.

Following criticism for her actions, Bouchard, a Canadian, has now deleted the original tweet and extended an apology.

Genie wrote on Twitter:

“I want to apologize for my tweet yesterday/It was a lapse in judgment, and unnecessary. Though I’ve always championed fair play, I didn’t have all my facts in order and certainly didn’t mean to cause harm. I’m going to continue to work on myself going forward, both on and off the court.”
