Rublev Wawrinka In Madrid

Stan Wawrinka and Andrey Rublev decided to settle their pre-match coin toss with a game of rock-paper-scissors, which caused chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani amusing consternation. The umpire, who was supposed to call the toss, became perplexed himself and gave Wawrinka the incorrect options.

In the coin toss footage, Lahyani is seen asking Wawrinka to select between “World” and “ATP” at first. He instantly corrected himself, noting that “Mutua” or “Madrid” were the proper choices. The coin displayed ‘ATP’ on the big screen, which baffled the Swiss veteran when he called the toss. “What? You said Madrid or Mutua!” said Stan.

Rublev interfered and declared Wawrinka the winner, leading to the decision to do the toss again. Even telling the Swiss to “take it” was done so by the Russian in good sportsmanship. The chair umpire, however, chose to restart the toss.

“They give you second life,” said Rublev. “You said Mutua, and it was Madrid.”

Andrei Rublev was then informed by Mohamed Lahyani that he had won. But in order to maintain fairness, the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters champion proposed playing a game of rock-paper-scissors to decide who would win.

Finally victorious, Stan Wawrinka decided to serve. Rublev, with his powerful hitting, was the superior man. In the third round, Andrey Rublev will go up against Yoshihito Nishioka, the No. 28 seed.
