After winning his third round match on Thursday, Italy’s Jannik Sinner suggested that he was prepared to withdraw from the Barcelona Open to avoid the possibility of suffering an injury.

After more than two hours of play in a mixed match, the world No. 8 defeated Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Sinner breezed through the first set in just 25 minutes, but the second was where he ran into trouble. He had to recover from breakdowns twice, and when a break went his way, he missed the chance to take advantage of it, creating a path for Nishioka to force a decider.

Despite the hiccup, Sinner won four of the final five games to secure the triumph. Sinner, who has advanced to the semifinals or farther at the past three Masters 1000 events, said afterward that his most recent victory wasn’t the finest and that he had trouble recovering from his previous match, which he had won in straight sets over Diego Schwartzman. He only succeeded in landing 44% of his first serves and winning 44% of his second serves against Nishioka.

Avoiding an injury

During the press conference, Jannik commented: “I have been playing a lot of matches lately and suffered from cramps. I have to recover for tomorrow because I know it will be a very tough match.

At the moment, I have no pain and that is the most important thing. The truth is that I expected to recover more from yesterday to today. We’ll see how I feel tomorrow. If I feel like today … I don’t want to get injured; that’s something I don’t want. Now the important thing is to recover. I know my body, after what happened last year, what its limit is.”
