“It’s not their fault,” says Casper Ruud defending Russian and Belorussian players

Casper Ruud explains why he was happy with Wimbledon's decision

Casper Ruud from Norway supports Wimbledon’s recent decision to eliminate the restriction on Russian and Belarusian players competing at this year’s tournament. Due to the Russia-Ukraine Conflict, the All England Club controversially opted to ban players from the aforementioned two nations last year. Because of this, the ATP and WTA decided to retaliate by depriving the tournament of all ranking points.

Wimbledon nonetheless made the decision to reverse their initial decision this year, with the requirement that competitors from the aforementioned nations sign a declaration outlining their opposition to the war. Ruud defended the choice, saying the athletes were not to blame for their birthplaces.

During an interview with Eurosport, Casper commented:

“It’s not their fault where they were born. As a colleague and opponent, you regretted that they couldn’t play last year. It’s one of the biggest and most historic tournaments we have, so it’s kind of fair and nice that they can play again. I mean, you can’t ask much more from these guys.”
