Ukrainian Lesya Tsurenko refuses to play vs. Aryna Sabalenka in Indian Wells

Lesia Tsurenko withdrew from her match at the BNP Paribas Open due to "personal reasons". Fans shouldn't have been surprised, as she has left tournaments in the middle eight times in her last 15 competitions.

The second match on Sunday night at the BNP Paribas Open was called off seconds before it was set to start because qualifier Lesia Tsurenko withdrew from her match against the No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Two hours prior to the match, 33-year-old Ukrainian Tsurenko was spotted warming up and practicing her serve on a practice court. Had “personal reasons” for retiring, according to the tournament’s official statement. The fans shouldn’t have been surprised, even though they were. Tsurenko has left a tournament in the middle eight times in her last 15 competitions; this doesn’t count her withdrawal from the qualifying rounds of the BNP Paribas Open last year. Nevertheless, many thought that the “personal reason” was she didn’t want to share the court with a Belarussian player.
