Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz keep battling for the top spot in the rankings. There is a rather curious situation that may materialize in the following days. If Carlos Alcaraz wins the Rio Open this week, he will have the same points as Novak Djokovic (6,980). However, in that case, the Serbian legend will retain the top spot in the rankings.
The rule
If two players are tied on points in the rankings, the player whose ranking is made up of more points from the mandatory events will take the lead. The Grand Slams, ATP Finals, and Masters 1000s are the biggest events on the calendar. And in this regard, Djokovic is ahead of the teenager, earning 5,820 points from major competitions compared to the world No. 2’s 5,090.

Currently the world no.1, Novak played his last match on the 29th of January when he overcame world no.3 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 7-6(4) 7-6(5) in the final of the Australian Open to win his 93rd career title.
At the moment, during this season Djokovic has managed to achieve a 12-0 record. Novak has won 2 titles in 2023 in Adelaide and Australian Open.
He is also scheduled to play in Indian Wells (BNP Paribas Open) after Dubai. The main draw will start on the 27th of February.
Alcaraz in Rio De Janeiro, ranking, and results in 2023
At the moment ranked no.2, Carlos has achieved a composed 7-0 match record in 2023. The Spaniard is participating in Rio De Janeiro where he ousted the world no.556 Mateus Alves 6-4 6-4, the world no.86 Fabio Fognini 6-75 6-2 6-4 and the world no.80 Dusan Lajovic 6-4 7-60.
Carlos Alcaraz will play the world no.139 Nicolas Jarry in the semifinal on Saturday at 7:30 pm on QUADRA GUGA KUERTEN. They have never played each other till now in top events.
