Ranked no. 7, Elina had a tough and an outstanding run in Singapore where she defeated Petra Kvitova, Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Wozniacki, and Kiki Bertens in the semifinal.
The match against the Dutchwoman in the final 4 lasted 2 hours and 38 minutes after the Ukrainian won 7-5 6-7 (5) 6-4.
Stephens
Ranked no.6, Sloane was coming from a rather lousy period before these Finals as she had a 2-5 win-loss record in the previous 7 matches.
However, as often happened with the American, Sloane was completely switched on during this event to beat Naomi Osaka, Kiki Bertens, Angelique Kerber, and Karolina Pliskova.
The semifinal against Pliskova was quite bizarre because the Czech was winning 6-0 2-0 40-15 before she started to implode and lose 0-6 6-4 6-1.
