Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are among the top favorite in Wimbledon and they made it clear from their opener.
Serena Williams
After a shaky against start world no. 113 Anna Tatishvili Serena went on “Serena Mode” to finally win 6-1 6-2. The world no.1 had a horrifying moment in the second game as she had a terrible slip on the court. Besides that everything was fine. The American blasted 16 aces and she broke her opponent 4 times. Match Stats
Williams commented “The first game was very important. I think she played well and I made an error or two, but it wasn’t like I played a terrible game. She hit some great shots.
I like the grass. It’s so unique. There’s so much history here. I love how everyone’s wearing white. I just love the tradition.”
The American will play Chanelle Scheepers in the second round. Head to head is 2-0 for the American.
Maria Sharapova
Maria was ruthless against world no. 247 Samantha Murray to defeat her 6-1 6-0. The match ended just after 58 minutes. The difference between these 2 players was huge with the Russian scoring 59 points vs. Murray’s 30. Match Stats
Maria had some comments about the abrupt change from clay to grass “There’s always a bit more tension coming into the first round of a Grand Slam. It was such a quick turnaround. Just a couple weeks ago you’re on the clay, coming onto the grass now. It’s a new surface and it’s a different feeling.
It was obviously a bit slower start than I wanted, but I think as the match progressed, I got more comfortable, found my toss a little bit better. I think my serve percentage went up, which was quite important considering she did want to play an aggressive game off of the second serves.”
Maria will play the second round against world no.85 Timea Bacsinszky. Head to head is 1-0 for the Russian.
