Serena Williams surprised the tennis world after announcing that the she will be back to competition at Wimbledon next week. Serena has been out from the WTA tour for 1 year and it is unclear what will be her condition. Nevertheless, the world no. 5 Maria Sakkari believes that it is great to have Serena back. Maria commented:
“I grew up watching Serena and Venus because my grandma is a tennis freak. I just feel like it’s very good for tennis that she is back and I think that it brought a little bit more suspense.”

Now the world no.276, the American played her last match on the 29th of June 2021 when she had to retire when playing against world no.34 Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the 1st round and the scoreline was 3-3 .
Maria Sakkari in 2022
Currently ranked no.5, Maria played her last match on the 18th of June when she lost to world no.17 Belinda Bencic 6-7(6) 6-4 6-4 in the semifinal in Berlin (draw).
At the moment, during this season Sakkari achieved a compiled 25-12 match record. Maria Sakkari’s most significant result of this year was getting to the final in St. Petersburg and Indian Wells.
Serena Williams and Maria Sakkari squared off only on 2 occasions. Their actual record is 1-1. The last time they squared off, Serena Williams won 6-3 6-7(6) 6-3 in the 4th round in New York (U.S. Open) in September 2020.
