What a great title for Maria Sharapova!
The Russian Beauty was struggling with her tennis in the recent months to go down in the rankings to an unceremonious world no.9.
During the last 2 weeks Maria has been turning the things around to win 2 big tournaments back to back in Stuttgart and now in Madrid.
The final against Simona Halep in Madrid was really tough for Maria that was 4-0 down in absolutely no time with the Romanian being all over the show to lose the opener 6-1. Maria found her way back in the second set to grab an early break and finally win 6-2.
In the decider Sharapova broke Simona Halep twice to lead 4-1. The Romanian managed to break back in the following game, but that was too late. Maria wins the decider 6-3. Match Stats.
Sharapova: What a week!
Maria commented “What a week,” Sharapova said in her on-court interview right after the match. “Last year I lost in the finals and I really wanted to go one extra step this year, and it’s just been such a fantastic week.
Simona and I had played a couple of times before, but she’s really on a different level now. I don’t know how I pulled it off. In the first set I wasn’t doing much to hurt her, and that’s the tennis she’s capable of playing – I knew I had to do some different things after the first set to win this match.
I don’t take any finals for granted, and every tournament means a lot to me. I came close last year, and I didn’t have a great first set today, but I knew it wasn’t over until the last point was played.”
