CONTROVERSY. Bleeding Raducanu criticized for receiving medical time out during US Open

MTO. These are the rules if a tennis player is bleeding during a match.

Emma Raducanu Bleeding

Emma Raducanu won a fantastic US Open title after defeating Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3 in an exciting final.

However, there was a little drama in the end when Emma received a completely legit medical time out before facing a crucial break point when leading 6-4 5-3 30-40. Raducanu was bleeding after losing a tough rally. Eventually, the match had to be stopped and she received a medical time-out. Leylah Fernandez was furious as that was stopping her momentum. She probably didn’t see that Emma was indeed bleeding.

Why the Medical Time out

Some complained about the Medical Time out, but that was completely in the rules that state as follows:

“If a player is bleeding, the Chair Umpire must stop play as soon as possible, and the Sports Physiotherapist must be called to the court by the Chair Umpire for evaluation and treatment. The Sports Physiotherapist, in conjunction with the Tournament Doctor, if appropriate, will evaluate the source of the bleeding, and will request a Medical Time-Out for treatment if necessary.

If requested by the Sports Physiotherapist and/or Tournament Doctor, the Referee in consultation with the Grand Slam Supervisor or Chair Umpire may allow up to a total of five (5) minutes to assure control of the bleeding.
If blood has spilled onto the court or its immediate vicinity, play must not resume until the blood spill has been cleaned appropriately.”
