Simona Halep wins the award as the most improved player of the year

At the beginning of 2013 all the eyes were on Sloane Stephens as the young American defeated the supreme Serena Williams in Melbourne to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open.

Then many were eyeing super-hot Genie Bouchard from Canada as the most interesting youngster on the WTA tour, but from the beginning of the second half of the seasons a “new” name came through: Simona Halep.

The Romanian was better known on tour for her “famous” breast reduction… a measure she had to undertake in order to have better movements on the tennis court.  Know she maks headlines for winning 6 tournaments in 2013.

Simona’s run started in June in Nurnberg (her maiden title) to then win in  ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Budapest, New Haven, Moscow and Sofia. (see all)

Now ranked a career high world no.11 Simona is expected to break into the top 10 in the first half of 2014.

Simona: I won a lot of titles this season

Halep commented “Next year will be tough because I’ll have to defend all the points. But I don’t want to make any plans. I won a lot of titles this season, I played really well and it’s not going to be easy next season. I just want to enjoy my time on the WTA tour and to feel the pleasure in every moment on the court.”
