Cori Gauff and Jessica Pegula will lead the US women’s tennis team at the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo. Top Americans Sofia Kenin and Serena Williams decided not to play because of the local restrictions imposed to counter the coronavirus pandemic.
Sofia Kenin commented: “That was a difficult decision, but I spoke and discussed that with my agents. I couldn’t take anyone with me, and I definitely wanted to have someone.”
Coco and Jessica will be joined by Jennifer Brady and Alison Riske for women’s singles. Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe, Tennys Sandgren, and Marcos Giron will be part of the men’s contingent.
The Olympic Games will start from July 23 to August 8, 2021
Gauff in Wimbledon, ranking, and results in 2021
Now the world no.23 (career-high), the American has achieved a compiled 29-11 record in 2021. Gauff is playing at the moment in Wimbledon where she toppled Francesca Jones 7-5 6-4.
Cori Gauff will square off with the world no.370 Elena Vesnina in the 2nd round on Thursday at 3:30 pm on Centre Court. In the past, they have never competed against each other till now in top competitions.
The American has won 1 title in 2021 in Parma.
Jessica Pegula in 2021
Now the world no.26, Jessica played her last match on the 30th of June when she lost to world no.65 Ludmilla Samsonova 6-4 3-6 6-3 in the 2nd round of the Wimbledon (draw).
Until now, during this year Pegula owns an overall 27-13 win-loss record. Jessica Pegula’s best result of this year was getting to the semifinal in Doha.

Serena Williams in 2021
Currently the world no.8, the American played her last match on the 29th of June when she had to retire when playing against world no.100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the 1st round and the scoreline was 3-3 .
Presently, during this year Serena has a 12-5 win-loss record. Serena Williams’s best result of the current year was getting to the semifinal in Melbourne and at the Australian Open.
Sofia Kenin in 2021
Currently the world no.6, the American played her last match on the 30th of June when she lost to world no.82 Madison Brengle 6-2 6-4 in the 2nd round of the Wimbledon (draw).
Presently, during this year Sofia has a 11-10 match record.
Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin played each other once. The head to head is 1-0 for Kenin. When they played, Sofia Kenin won 6-2 7-5 in the 3rd round in Paris (French Open) in June 2019.
