When the French Open decided to postpone its start by one week, it was clear that some minor tournaments that were scheduled to be played on grass after the French major would have suffered.
The new WTA500 in Berlin is scheduled to be staged next week with the participation of important names. Unfortunately, the tournament had to register the retirement of some top players such as Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, Iga Swiatek, Jennifer Brady, Sofia Kenin and Maria Sakkari.
Most of the players are just tired after the French Open, while some others (eg. Barty) got injured while playing the French slam. Naomi Osaka is trying to regroup after the well-known controversy that followed her retirement from the Roland Garros after she refused to attend the press conferences.
Still, the tournament will be blessed with the presence of some other exciting players such as Aryna Sabalenka, Bianca Andreescu, Karolina Pliskova, Belinda Bencic, Petra Kvitova, Garbine Muguruza, Vika Azarenka, and Amanda Anisimova.

Currently the world no.9 (career-high), the Pole played her last match on the 9th of June when she lost to world no.18 Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-4 in the quarter of the French Open (draw).
Currently, during this year Iga has a 23-6 match record. Iga conquered 2 titles in 2021 in Adelaide and in Rome.

At the moment ranked no.18 (career-high), Sakkari played her last match on the 10th of June when she was overcome by world no.33 Barbora Krejcikova 7-5 4-6 9-7 in the semifinal of the French Open (draw).
This year the Greek has a 21-10 record. Maria Sakkari’s best achievement of the present year was reaching the semifinal in Abu Dhabi, Melbourne, Miami and at the French Open.
