The Madrid Open has already lost an important player: Serena Williams. However, the local organization can also miss the participation of the world number one Novak Djokovic.
According to reports, Novak may skip the prestigious tournament in Spain. Nothing is sure but in this case, it means that the world number one will compete in Monte Carlo (12th April) before playing at the home tournament in Belgrade (19th April). So probably Novak does not want to play Madrid (3rd of May) so as not to have a packed schedule ahead of his French Open campaign. Therefore Novak could skip Madrid and after that, he should compete again in Rome (10th of May). Still everything needs to be confirmed.
At the moment, it looks like Djokovic will be skipping Madrid this year, not 100% yet. He will play in Rome though.
Novak won in Madrid in 2019 meaning he gets to hold on to 500 points.
