Finally we have our tournament!
VENUS WILLIAMS – HALEP 6-1 4-6 7-6 (6)
Venus advanced in a thriller match. After cruising in the first set (6-1), Venus started to have problems in the second set to lose it 6-4. The third was a very close encounter that ended in a thrilling tie break when the 2 players where on a 6-6 scoreline. Then it was Venus’ superior experience that allowed her to defeat the Romanian and to advance to the next round.
STOSUR – MARTIC 7-5 4-6 7-6 (5)
This was another surprising tough match. The 2012 US Champion was expected to have an easier one against the 21 years old Croatian (ranked 51). The Australian had to fight hard to win the match in 2h and 23m at the tiebreak.
LI – MUGURUZA BLANCO 6-2 6-4
Easy match for the 2011 French Open champion against the world nr.120. The only weird stuff is that the Chinese had to save 12 break points (on 15) and she was broken 3 times (but she broke her opponent 6 times!).
CIRSTEA – BARTOLI 6-7 (6) 6-4 6-3
Maybe this wasn’t a huge upset. Sorana Cirstea is recently playing a decent tennis and Marion was not expected to adapt to the new surface. Eventually the match ended after a 3 hours battle in favour of the Romanian.
CETKOVSKA – ZVONAREVA 6-2 6-2
This was a bad upset. It took barely 1 hour for the Check to beat the seed and world nr.10. Vera never managed to get a break point to be broken 4 times.
