Serena Williams stuns again, the Italians surprise everyone – 2012 US Open

Wow… what a day! Serenazilla lurks over the US Open while we had an Italian Job!

Serena – Hlavackova 6-0 6-0

Everybody knew that this was an unbiased match, but that was too much. Everything started at the first point when Serena returned a 100 miles pizza at her opponent leaving everybody in awe. This was a 57 minutes agony with Serena blasting 31 winners and winning 60 points (vs. Hlavackova’s 29).

“The first point of the whole match, I served and she returned like a 100-mile-per-hour forehand,” Hlavackova said. “That was like: ‘O.K., I know who I am playing. You don’t have to prove it to me.’ But she obviously wanted to prove it to me.”

Serena will play Ana Ivanovic (first quarter final in a slam after winning the Roland Garros in 2008). Head to head is 3-0 for Serena (she has never dropped a set with Ana). They have already played twice at the US in 2006 and 2011.

Errani – Kerber 7-6 (5), 6-3

Surprising stuff here. Many says that Errani is good at playing minor tournaments and she can’ t compete at high level. This is plain wrong as Sara produced another fine performance against another top 10 player. The key was winning a tough first set at the tiebreak in 71 minutes.

An elated Errani was also very happy to play her best friend and doubles partner Roberta Vinci in the quarters. “We are also very friends outside the court,” Errani said of their success together. “This is one thing that helps very much on the court. … But also because we are playing both very good. I think this year we are playing very good tennis.”

Vinci – Radwanska 6-1 6-4

What an upset! Roberta Vinci is coming from nowhere to play one of her finest season of her career. Roberta won the Texas Open a couple of weeks ago and now she has just trashed the world no.2 in 2 easy sets.

“I’m happy to play against her, for sure an Italian goes to the semi-final,” said  Vinci “She’s my best friend, so I’m very happy to play against her, for sure.”

Vinci said to be super happy about the rise of the Italian tennis (ladies) “For sure, for sure. When Schiavone won Roland Garros and Flavia goes to top 10, also Sara in the final in Roland Garros,” Vinci said, “Me, I try to come like the other ones for sure.”

The head to head is 3-2 for Errani.
