Djokovic and Ferrer to play the semifinal – 2012 Open

Stunning quarterfinals at the US Open. After the huge Federer’s upset at the hands of Tomas Berdych, we had 2 wonferful matches in the lower part of the draw.

Djokovic – Del Potro 6-2, 7-6(3), 6-4

There is not much to say here. You can be a fan of Roger, Rafa or Delpo, but when Nole plays like this it is hard to think he can lose with anyone. Today he was just too good, too damn good. This was a classic match when there is superior guy playing against an opponent that tries desperately to stay at his level without succeeding.

The first set was a walk in the park. 2 breaks for Nole, no break point conceded and 30vs20 points in favour of the Serb. The second set was an epic one with Delpo winning the first 10 consecutive points. Then the Argentine tried to hang on with his serve, but Nole was just to good when the ball was down for a rally, just too superior. So Nole was defending his service games without many problems while Delpo was continuously struggling. Eventually the Argentine didn’t hold serve when he was 5-4 up and he found himself to defend his service game when he was 5-6 down. It took 17 minutes to win that game for Delpo. Then Nole won an easy tiebreak to win the third set 6-4.

“He is a great player. I was lucky to get out of the second set with a two-set advantage. It’s always entertaining playing in these night sessions. I’m very happy to be in the semi-finals.” said Nole

“I had the chance to win that set, but Nole played really well in the important moments,” said del Potro. “Also you need luck to win these kind of matches. He deserved today, and he played much better than me for the rest of the match. He was too much for me.”

Ferrer – Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-7(5), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4)

What a battle! What a match! David played once again as a warrior to win this epic in 4 hours and 31 minutes. The last set was a match in the match as it took 82 minutes for David to win it at the tiebreak after he was 1-4 down.

“It was a very emotional match, one of the best emotional matches of my career,” said Ferrer. “My opponent, he also deserved to win this match. In one tie-break it’s a lottery, and I had luck in important moments. My respect to Janko Tipsarevic, because he’s playing really good and having a really good season the last year and this year also.”

“I think it was a high, intense match with not too many ups and downs, apart from my bad tennis in the middle of the first set where I lost I think four games in a row,” said Tipsarevic. “I don’t think that there was any other part of the match where either of us played really bad… I said after my last match victory both of us are baseline players, both of us I guess are big fighters on court, so something like this was only expected.”
