It’s a tough time for everyone with the Coronavirus pandemic and the tennis organizations are doing everything they can to keep our beloved sport alive.
Tennis Australian went through a gigantic task to organize the first slam of the year even if the Australian government is hyper-conscious about safety.
Most of the players will have to endure a quarantine in Melbourne. However, Tennis Australia has organized a sort of “elitarian bubble” in Adelaide. Craig Tiley, the CEO of Tennis Australia, disclosed that they had to release Melbourne’s pressure as they were struggling to quarantine the players and their teams in one shot. Therefore, South Australia agreed to help to create a bubble for 50 people. Eventually, Tennis Australia decided to support the decision by organizing an exhibition.
Novak Djokovic and Jeremy Chardy vs. the bubble
The exhibition in Adelaide will feature the top3 players in the world (ATP, WTA) alongside some other top players such as Serena Williams. However, it seems that the quarantine in Adelaide is much softer than the one in Melbourne. That made some players vent their frustration as they believe that is not fair the top players benefit from additional help.
Jeremy Chardy was also quite upset that the players in Adelaide will have superior facilities and can train in the gym at the hotel. In Melbourne, the players can go out of their hotel for maximum 5 hours. In addition, the players in Melbourne can be accompanied by maximum 2 people in Australia while a wider group of people can join the players in Adelaide.
The Frenchman told L’Equipe:
“This announcement for the top 3s is a bit out of the blue and it’s weird, to put it mildly.
They will even be able to benefit from a gym at the hotel and will be able to do their exercises which will not count towards the five-hour quota. Everyone can go out. They will almost be able to live normally.”
Apparently, Djokovic agrees with Chardy even if he is part of the players that are supposed to go to Adelaide. The Serbian champion has always fought for equality in tennis and this double standard seems to be unfair.
