At 23 years of age, Naomi Osaka has achieved so much in her life. The Japanese sensation has already won 3 slams and she is widely considered an icon for her strong activism defending the rights of the black community.

During an interview, Naomi confessed that once she felt she was about to die. The world no.3 was vacationing in Turks and Caicos. She was paddleboarding with her sister Mari when a strong current pulled her away from the shore. Naomi was also terrified because she revealed that she can’t swim that well.

Naomi commented:

“The current took us and I almost died. Listen, if you’re scared, everything becomes more exaggerated. So I’m going to tell you my story. Mari might say I’m lying, but this is what happened to me personally.”

According to Naomi, the idea of paddleboarding came from her sister. Things started to get ugly and Naomi even fell from the board.

“And then I fall in the water, so now I’m like thinking about all the sharks in the Caribbean and I was like screaming at her, like, ‘If I die, this is on you. You’re going to have to tell mom how I died in the Turks and Caicos,” she added.

Eventually, Mari also said that she spotted a shark to make Naomi even a bit more historical to say:

“I’m like crying, and then I get back on the board and then she decides that she wants to say that she sees a shark. So now I’m like screaming and crying. But in that moment I just really thought, like, I don’t want to die like that. Yeah, that’s the end of the story.”

Naomi will commence her season in Melbourne. The Japanese ace decided not to compete in Abu Dhabi in the current WTA500 to go straight to Australia and play the first slam of the year.
