Roger Federer reaches the quarter finals, but it was not as easy ride.
The world nr.2 had a good start and he got an easy 6-3 in the opening set. The second set was a Federer’s disaster: he imploded. His returns were quite poor and he displayed many sloppy shots. There was the impression that he was to confident: a situation that sometimes leads to disasters. This made both Robredo’s confidence and game going sky high.
It was a dangerous moment for the world nr.2, but the Swiss read perfectly the game.(he has some experience…)
He started to be very aggressive from the very beginning of the third set and he was clearly more focussed. Federer got a 3-0 lead (all games were very tight), than he won the set 6-3.
Last set was typical Federer’s show: textbook tennis, many ‘ohhhhh’ shots and a desperate opponent on the other side of the net.
What did we get from this game? The Swiss can definitely play his best tennis in this tournament, but he has to avoid tennis amnesia. Robredo is a very good player, but he has definitely something less than the Swiss Maestro. The story can be quite different in matches against players like Nadal, Djokovic, Soderling and Murray. The should be not as forgiving.
Federer will play next match against Roddick or his fellow countryman Wawrinka.
