Among so much uncertainty, it seems more and more plausible that the US Open is going to happen in 2020. Novak Djokovic has been training on hard court with the US Open balls, and both Andy Murray and Johanna Konta are training to play in the American slam.
Andy Murray and the US Open
During a recent interview, Andy admitted that he doesn’t feel 100% confident with what has been happening all over the world. However, things are getting clearer and the Brit is ready to go and play his first major since he almost declared his retirement in Melbourne back in 2019.
“Four or five weeks ago, we were pretty sceptical. My training the past week and during the event this week is to try to get in shape for the US Open. If it wasn’t happening, my schedule would be different. Mentally, I’m planning for it to go ahead, but I’ll be apprehensive.
I was thinking about travelling somewhere beforehand to get in some hot- weather training. But then you’re increasing your risk of catching the virus, which means you can’t train or travel for a couple of weeks, which could then put playing a grand slam in doubt. Hopefully it can go ahead but, if not, I’m also OK with that. It’s not like I’m saying it must go ahead. We need to try to get back to competing when it’s safe to do so,” said Andy
Andy won the US Open back in 2012 after beating Novak Djokovic 7–6, 7–5, 2–6, 3–6, 6–2.
Jo Konta also planning to play the US Open
Andy will most probably have the company of Jo Konta that has also expressed her optimism about playing the US Open to say:
“We haven’t had any meetings for a few weeks but everything is pointing in the direction that it is going to go ahead. Just basing my opinion on all the information that is there, I think it probably will.”
Andy Murray in 2020
Currently the world no.129, Andy played his last match on the 20th of November 2019 when he beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-77 6-4 7-65 in the Rubber 1 of the Davis Cup.
Johanna Konta in 2020
Currently ranked no.14, Johanna played her last match on the 7th of March when she lost to Marie Bouzkova 6-3 6-4 in the semifinal in Monterrey.
Johanna Konta’s most significant result of the current season was reaching the semi-finals in Monterrey.
