Nadal’s mental and physical well-being the priority in his schedules says coach Moya

Nadal and Carlos Moya

Rafael Nadal is currently spending his time in Mallorca, taking advantage of the break imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Spanish legend is enjoying his time on his new fantastic yacht, and he has been training lightly to keep his shape.

The tour will be back in the middle of August, but the schedules are incredibly packed. Many tournaments are scheduled back to back also because it was decided to resume the clay-court season in September.

5 key tournaments are going to be played back to back. After Cincinnati (played in New York), the US Open will be staged. Then the European clay-court season will resume with the ATP1000 in Madrid, then Rome and finally the Roland Garros.

Rafa hasn’t confirmed his schedules, however, it seems more and more plausible that he will skip the North American swing and therefore the US Open where he is the defending champion with the aim of being fully fit to play on clay.

Carlos Moya about Rafa’s schedules

Talking to Radio Mallorca, Nadal’s coach Carlos Moya stressed the fact that Rafa’s well being is the absolute priority.

“We haven’t talked yet about the precise calendar, it is true that there are 5 tournaments that are very closed together and are very important. He isn’t 20 years old and we’ve always prioritized Rafa’s well being considering he needs to achieve some results to be able to have freedom to choose his calendar, but his mental and physical state are the priority so we need to sit down these next two weeks to see how we organize that calendar,” he commented.

Then Moya commented about the fact that the conditions of these top tournaments are completely different and it’s well-known that this can cause injuries.

“He will surely think he can do anything and he can in fact do anything, but we have to sit down and think it through, not daydreaming about what may happen if he plays everything, the conditions are very different and we have to adapt, there’s no guide to help us, we have to bet on something but whatever decision we take, it must be always thinking of Rafa’s well being,” Carlos added.
