Nadal, Ferrer, Almagro not to play the Davis Cup first round

Bad news for Spain as its top 3 players should miss the first round tie against Canada.

The Spanish Armada is meant to play in Vancouver from the 1st to the 3rd of February against Raonic & C., but there might be problems.

This schedule is not the best

To be frank the 1st round date is not the best as it would be less than a week away from the Australian Open and a trip from Melboune to Vancouver… well it is not the easiest one.

This first tie woud also come after a very packed start of the season, so most players are really not keen on playing a very tense long week end after a tricky January.

Nadal

It’s quite difficult that Rafa will play the first tie after his recovery also and especially because the tie will be on indoor hard courts.

Ferrer

David has to cope with an incredibly packed start of the season to comment “This year I will play in Doha. So here (Abu Dhabi/Mubadala), Doha, Auckland and Melbourne, because I will not play the first tie of Davis Cup. Because I can’t play everything and I need to rest after the Australian Open. We have to play best of five sets there and after that I would like to rest.”

Almagro

Nicolas doen’s seem also very happy to play to comment “I need to think because I had many problems last year with my shoulder and it was really tough.

I had eight infiltrations in my shoulder during the year and I don’t want to play like this again. I want to be ready to fight all the matches, all the weeks.

But Davis Cup is special, Davis Cup is another emotions, many great moments and we’ll see. But right now I want to enjoy the beginning of the season, I want to enjoy the ending of last year and we’ll see what happens in February.”

Who is going to play?

Well… Spain has a “long bench” and it can still rely on players such as Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez for the doubles (Granollers is also a strong single player), Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez (but the latter had some disagreements with the team as we wasn’t invited to play the final in Prague).

The Canadian team has very good chances to upset the Spanish Armada.
