Bianca Andreescu is yet to play a match this season. The reigning US Open champion is still recovering from a knee injury that she sustained at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen last year. The world No. 6 was part of the Canadian team picked for this week’s Fed Cup qualifier tie against Switzerland. Bianca’s coach, Sylvain Bruneau, had stated that the teenager would only play if she was fully fit.
Andreescu’s not quite there yet
It seems that Andreescu is yet to fully recover from her injury after Canada’s team captain, Heidi El Tabakh, failed to select the teenager for singles action in their Fed Cup qualifier. While she may be close to a singles return, her team captain said they did not want to risk aggravating her injury. “We weren’t going to have her play singles unless she was 100 percent or close to 100 percent. She’s not quite there yet. So we just don’t want to take our chances and have a big setback.” Canada trail 2-0 to Switzerland after the first day of their Fed Cup qualifier. Belinda Bencic and Jill Teichmann won their singles matches to put the Swiss team in a commanding lead.
Dubai could be Andreescu’s first singles tournament
While Andreescu did not participate in a singles match on Friday, she will team up with Gabriela Dabrowski for the determining doubles match on Saturday. The Canadian has been practicing with her teammates. Winning the doubles match will increase Canada’s hopes of a comeback victory in the best of five series. After failing to participate in singles action this week, Bianca’s next chance in the singles competition will be at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The WTA tournament will begin on 17th February. Speaking about her ongoing rehabilitation, the world number six said she was staying positive and hoped to be back on the court soon. “Well, I don’t need surgery so I wouldn’t say it’s very bad. I’m just trying to rehab as much as possible and stay as positive as I can.”
This is not the first time that the 19-year-old is struggling with an injury. Last season, the world No.6 suffered a shoulder injury which led to her missing most of the grass-court season, including, Wimbledon. This year she has already skipped the Australian Open. Despite her injury struggles last year, she won three WTA titles. Her best performance of the season was her US Open final victory over Serena Williams.
