Ever since Serena Williams came back to the tennis court after becoming a mother in 2017, she is yet to win a single grand slam. The 38-year-old has managed to reach four finals without clinching any major honor. This has been frustrating for her considering that she is only one grand slam shy off breaking Margret Court’s record of 24 slams won. Though Serena is close to matching this achievement, she keeps coming up short.
Despite Serena Williams starting the 2020 season on a high note, a 24th grand slam title has remained elusive. She set off well by clinching the ASB Classic tournament in Auckland. Next was the Australian Open which she kick-started her campaign with two wins in a row. Unfortunately, the former world number one’s participation in the Australian Open was brought to an abrupt end in the third round. She was eliminated by Wang Qiang from China.
Serena Williams needs a change in strategy
Serena Williams’ failure to lift a single grand slam title since giving birth to Olympia Ohanian has become a point of concern. Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, is among a group of tennis enthusiasts that believes the current world number nine needs to start winning majors as soon as possible. According to BBC, he said that Serena first needs to change her approach towards grand slams. She needs different goals, strategies, and angles to match or even exceed Margaret Court’s all-time record. Besides, it is high the tennis sensation realized that time is not on her side. As time goes by, retirement continues to beckon her. Therefore, she has limited chances to count on to reach some significant milestones.
Patrick Mouratoglou is positive about Serena Williams
Patrick Mouratoglou still maintains a lot of faith in Serena Williams. While talking to BBC, he admitted that the former world number one still has the potential to challenge and win more grand slams. But before then, the root cause of why she is not winning ought to be established. Afterward, a change in strategy should be implemented to regain her lost winning ways. However, Patrick Mouratoglou is confident that Serena is very close to winning that much-coveted grand slam title.
“We have to face reality, but she’s positive that she can make it, otherwise she probably wouldn’t be on a tennis court anymore. She believes she can, and I believe it too. She’s not that far, but we have to change a few things,” he told BBC.
